Berman Jakub
Berman Jakub (23 December 1901, Warsaw – 10 April 1984, Warsaw), brother of Adolf Berman, lawyer, communist activist.
He joined the Communist Party of Poland in 1928. During World War II, he resided in the USSR. In December 1943, he was the secretary of the Union of Polish Patriots and became a member of its General Board in April 1944. In the years 1944–1956, he worked in the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Polish Workers’ Party (renamed to the Polish United Workers’ Party in 1948). In 1948, he was one of the most vehement critics of Władysław Gomułka and the so-called right-wing nationalist turn. In the years 1948–1955, he was one of the highest-ranking officials in the party. In the years 1949–1956, he worked in the Public Security Committee of the Politburo and was responsible for the state terror policies. In the years 1944–1956, he sat in the State National Council and the Sejm, and held the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the years 1954–1956. He was removed from politics in 1956 and dismissed from the Polish United Workers’ Party in 1957. In 1969–1974, he was surveilled on suspicion of being involved in “revisionist-Zionist activities.”
