The press lies

One of the most popular slogans used by students participating in the 1968 protests. During demonstrations, the opponents of the authorities would chant “The press lies!” and blatantly rip up or burn newspapers. This way they aimed to show their defiance in the face of the smear campaign put into motion by regime journalists, who presented a factitious, defamatory vision of the student protests.

Other popular slogans condemning the bias of the press and intensified activities of the censorship were: “We want free speech,” “We demand the truth,” “To hell with censorship.”
